Barcelona continued their perfect start to the new LaLiga season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Athletic Club at the Camp Nou.
Raphinha opened the scoring in the first half before Fermín López sealed the points late on, as Hansi Flick’s side made it two wins from two and maintained their early position at the top of the table.
Barcelona dominated possession and created the majority of the chances, with Raphinha once again showing his ability to operate effectively as a central striker.
The Brazilian went close early on when he headed against the post, while Lamine Yamal also tested Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón with a dangerous effort from outside the box.
Barcelona eventually got their reward in the 37th minute.
Pedri split the Athletic defence with an excellent through ball, allowing Raphinha to race through on goal. The forward rounded Simón before calmly finishing into an empty net to give Barcelona the lead.
Raphinha had already scored twice in Barcelona’s opening-day victory at Elche and his latest goal takes him to three goals in the opening two league matches, further strengthening the case for him to continue in the central attacking role.
Athletic had opportunities to get back into the match, but Barcelona continued to control proceedings after the break.
Yamal came particularly close to doubling the advantage when his powerful effort from the edge of the area struck the crossbar. Simón also produced several important saves to keep Athletic within touching distance.
Barcelona’s summer additions were also on show, with Anthony Gordon making his full debut and Rodri coming off the bench in the second half to make his first appearance for the club.
Athletic almost found an equaliser when Oihan Sancet struck the post with around 15 minutes remaining, but Barcelona soon put the result beyond doubt.
In the 82nd minute, Karim Adeyemi’s low cross caused problems inside the Athletic penalty area. Aymeric Laporte failed to deal with the ball, allowing Fermín López to pounce and fire past Simón.
The goal completed a strong performance from Barcelona, although the final scoreline arguably flattered Athletic given the number of opportunities created by the hosts.
The victory gives Barcelona six points from their opening two matches, with the champions having scored seven goals without conceding.
For Flick, the result provides further evidence that Barcelona are already finding their rhythm. Raphinha’s form in the central role is particularly encouraging, while the arrival of Rodri adds another major option to an already deep squad.
Barcelona will now look to maintain their perfect start when they return to action against Rayo Vallecano on Monday.
