Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an extraordinary 21-year Argentina career to an emotional end.
The 39-year-old confirmed on Monday that he will no longer represent Argentina, ending the international career of a player who ultimately delivered the country’s greatest football prize while establishing himself as its most-capped player and leading goalscorer.
Messi made the announcement in a lengthy statement published on his official Instagram account, bringing an end to months of speculation about whether he would continue following Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final.
The decision comes just weeks after Argentina were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the World Cup final in the United States.
Messi admitted that walking away from the national team was an extremely painful decision.
“It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deeply — but I understand that the time has come,” Messi wrote in his Instagram statement, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Argentina captain also made it clear that his decision was not down to a lack of commitment to the national team.
“I swear to you that I’ve always given it my all,” Messi said in the statement, according to Euronews.
His international career began in 2005 and ultimately produced 207 appearances and 125 goals for Argentina, both national records.
Messi leaves Argentina after achieving his greatest dream
For much of Messi’s early international career, the biggest question surrounding him was whether he could replicate his club success with Argentina.

Messi’s statement suggests that the timing of his decision is partly about recognising that a new generation of Argentine players is ready to take over.
“I’ve given it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really talented young players coming up who deserve their spots,” Messi said, according to Euronews.
Messi revealed that he had actually written the statement announcing his decision on July 21, just two days after the World Cup final.
However, the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi, further reinforced his decision. Jorge Messi died on August 8.
Sky Sports reported that Messi said: “Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.”
The timing means Messi’s announcement arrives shortly after one of the most difficult periods of his personal life, as well as the disappointment of falling short in what proved to be his final World Cup.
Messi’s Argentina legacy
There is little left for Messi to prove in an Argentina shirt.
He departs as the country’s record appearance holder and record goalscorer, having played 207 times and scored 125 goals.
More importantly, he leaves as the captain who finally brought Argentina the World Cup trophy that had eluded the country since 1986.
His international honours include the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 World Cup, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2024 Copa América, alongside Olympic gold with Argentina’s Under-23 side.
The emotional significance of the announcement is therefore less about what Messi failed to achieve and more about the extraordinary transformation of his relationship with the Argentina national team.
For years, Messi was criticised in Argentina whenever the team fell short. Now he walks away having become arguably the most important player in the country’s modern football history.

Messi’s retirement applies to Argentina rather than club football.
He remains an Inter Miami player and is contracted with the MLS club through 2028, meaning his playing career is not necessarily over.
