In the dramatic final hours of the summer transfer window, Manchester City finalized a blockbuster £125 million (€146m) deal to sign Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
The transfer equals the British record fee set by Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool in 2025. The total package includes £120 million in guaranteed fees with performance-related add-ons that could see the final figure rise as high as £145 million. The 25-year-old World Cup winner has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium through 2031.

The move marks the end of a long-running saga that began in May, when Fernández first signaled his desire for a fresh challenge following Chelsea’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Chelsea had set an informal £120 million asking price with an August 14 deadline for interested clubs. While that initial cutoff passed without an official bid, City reignited direct negotiations on Monday after their pursuit of other midfield targets stalled. The Premier League champions eventually agreed to pay an extra £5 million above Chelsea’s initial evaluation to secure the deal before the 11:00 PM deadline.
Chelsea maintained the agreement despite late chaos on deadline day. The Blues were set to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as a direct replacement, but the deal collapsed in the final minutes of the window when Monaco pulled out. Rather than reneging on their commitment to City, Chelsea honored the transfer.
Chelsea will make an £18 million profit on Fernández, having originally signed him from Benfica for £106.8 million in January 2023. During his three-and-a-half seasons in West London, Fernández recorded 31 goals and 30 assists in 170 appearances.
